Volunteer Opportunities

We have various Volunteer Opportunities within our Clubs and the Administrative office.

Please review the locations of our Clubs and the Programs that we offer.

Because our work deals with children we do a background check on all of our volunteers and employees.

This is a link to our pdf Volunteer Application

Please complete the application and contact the Unit /Units you are interested in for a visit and to discuss the specific volunteer opportunities within each club.  You may leave the application with the staff member that you meet with and we'll process your application and contact you to begin your volunteering.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Virginia nurture’s a young person’s self-esteem by instilling in them a sense of belonging, usefulness, influence, and competence. Clubs do this by providing daily one-on-one relationships with caring adult professionals and volunteers and fun, well-rounded programming. Below are the five core program areas that are run in each Unit:

Education and Career Development

Each core program area has individual programs that total over 40 national programs to help meet the interests and needs of each Club member. The example teer position descriptions below detail what is needed to build relationships and be involved with the many Club programs.

The volunteer tutor will assist Club professionals in the execution and maintenance of the programs run for Education and Career Development. Power Hour, for Club members ages 6-12 and 13-18, is a program that provides tutoring and homework assistance, offering members the tools they need to become self-directed learners. The volunteer tutor must be self-motivated and have a passion for learning, and work well with children in a one-on-one setting. Materials will be provided for tutoring sessions, but ideas and suggestions on how to improve the experience for members are always welcome.

While the Club prides itself on the amount of children we serve, each child still needs as much individual attention as possible. The volunteer mentor will share his/her experiences and knowledge in a more personal setting.  Mentoring can take place one-on-one, throughout the course of a day of general activities at the Club, or perhaps as part of one of our many small-group clubs, such as SMART Girls, Passport to Manhood, Street SMART, and Torch Club--just to name a few! While mentoring moments are never fully planned, the Club offers many opportunities for focused, informative sessions through which informal guidance and mentoring can happen.  The volunteer mentor must possess excellent listening skills, be detail-oriented, and be able to act as a mediator in group discussions.

The volunteer fitness aide will assist Club professionals in the execution and maintenance of programs in the Sports, Fitness and Recreation core area--specifically, those activities affiliated with the Triple Play program.  A knowledge of fitness and physical development, ability to handle active groups of children, and conflict resolution skills are essential.  These activities may take place at the Club or on the grounds of another facility.  Coaches for soccer, basketball, tennis, golf, cycling or a variety of other sports can be accommodated and are much-appreciated.  Please contact the Unit Director for specific instructions on what sports and fitness activities are currently in practice at the Club, and what the staff at each Unit would like to achieve in this area.
